“…and as soon as I could read and write,
I was put to learn a trade,
to which I soon took a dislike,
owing to the reading of
voyages and travels,
which occupied all my leisure moments.
The History of Robinson Crusoe,
in particular, inflamed my
young imagination:
I was impatient to encounter
adventures like him”

(René Caillié, Mauzé, 19 Nov. 1799 – La Badère , c. 1838)

I was the son of a baker who left home
at the age of 16 with 60 francs
and a big dream:
discover Timbuktu.
Ibn Battuta would say no white man
could visit Timbuktu
as he would be killed
before arriving at his destination.
I visited Africa many times and learnt
Arabic customs and the Koran.
But to survive, I also needed a talisman:
a believable and powerful story about
myself to share with natives
encountered along the way.
In the end, I realised the real city
wasn’t as great as the one in the myth.
The journey itself was the real gift!
